People are continually learning things, both formally (through education and training) and informally, by themselves or through contact with others. The concept of recognising, validating and certifying knowledge, skills and competence acquired over the years within a work-related context has been consensual both in Portugal and at European level for many years. In line with this strategy, Centro Europeu de Línguas provides an evaluation service to measure language competence and, consequently, certify active skills in accordance with the level system of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

In this way, adults may obtain recognition for skills acquired throughout life, whether formally, informally or both, therefore contributing to higher levels of qualification and employability, in addition to encouraging and motivating further participation in training, within the spirit of lifelong learning.
